Lockhart, Texas, is conveniently located 25 miles from Austin, 48 miles from San Antonio, and just 15 miles east of San Marcos off Interstate 35. It covers 15.6 square miles and is the county seat of Caldwell County. Lockhart is easily accessible via Highway 183, the 130 Tollway, or Interstate 10 from anywhere in Texas. The City of Lockhart is a home rule municipality operating under a council-manager form of government. The City Council is comprised of seven members, including the Mayor. Lockhart’s Development Services Department houses two major functions: the Planning Division and the Inspections Division. The Building Official is part of the Inspections Division, which also includes code enforcement for violations of property maintenance code, such as overgrown lots, litter, stagnant water, discarded appliances and furniture, junk vehicles, and unsecured or vacant buildings.
Job Requirements
Reporting directly to the City Manager, the Building Official enforces and ensures compliance with building codes and ordinances pertaining to electrical, plumbing, mechanical, gas, energy, fire, and building construction codes for the City. This position is also responsible for conducting inspections and serving as the Chief Code Enforcement Officer.
The City of Lockhart seeks a flexible, high-energy person to serve as the new Building Official. This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, plus five years of experience as a Code Enforcement Officer, Building Inspector, or in related work. A bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Candidates should have the following licenses and certifications:
Plumbing Inspector’s License and Code Enforcement License by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation are required or able to obtain.
Certifications to inspect electrical, plumbing, mechanical, gas, and building construction issued from International Code Council (ICC) preferred or ability to obtain.
Building Plans Review certification from International Code Council (ICC) preferred, or able to obtain within one year of employment.
Valid Texas driver’s license and a good driving record.
The City of Lockhart offers a competitive annual salary range of $65,048 to $97,573, based on experience and qualifications.
